Peep Show…

I’ll probably get my Marshmallow Peep Fan Club Membership revoked (yes, I really belong) for chopping up Peeps, but I wanted to see kind of an experiment of sorts.

There are three types of Peep eaters: Number one, the plain Peep eater who eats them fresh out of the container no problem. Number two is the Peep hater who claims some ridiculous thing about them being too sweet. 🙂 And Number three, my category, those of us who love the stale Peep.

My poor mother each year would have to by my Peeps early and poke a hole in the side of the containers so that by the time Easter did come around they would be properly ready. And if they weren’t, I wasn’t eating them.

So I kind of wanted to put them in ice cream to see if freezing them would have the same effect of sorts as making them stale. Not entirely, though I can say I like frozen Peeps now over fresh ones still. So in a way my little experiment works.

My friend thought it was odd I was using chocolate milk instead of just milk. But I figured I was making chocolate ice cream so why not start with that. Mine came from a local dairy and is super thick. If you can’t get good chocolate milk, or one you really like, just use whole milk and add an extra tsp. of cocoa powder and an extra ¼ cup of sugar to the mix and you should be good to go.

This is a thick, creamy, rich, and yes, sweet ice cream. There are Peeps in there after all…and marshmallows melted into the ice cream custard itself.

So what Peep category do you fall into?

Milk Chocolate Marshmallow Peep Ice Cream

8 ounces milk chocolate chips
1 cup chocolate milk (try and find the good stuff, not like Quick)
2 cups heavy whipping cream (I use a kind that is 40%)
¼ cup granulated sugar
Pinch of salt
1 ½ tsp. unsweetened cocoa powder
½ tsp. vanilla extract
1 cup mini marshmallows
2 egg yolks
6 Peeps Candy, chopped into piece
2 Chocolate Covered Peeps Candy, chopped into pieces

In a medium saucepan, over medium heat, warm the milk, sugar, marshmallow and salt together. When the marshmallows have almost melted, continue to the next step.

In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the egg yolks.

Temper the egg yolks by slowly pouring the milk mixture into the egg yolks, whisking constantly, then scrape the warmed egg yolks back into the saucepan.

Stir the mixture constantly over medium heat with a heatproof spatula, scraping the bottom as you stir, until the mixture thickens and coats the spatula, this will take about 3-4 minutes.

Place chocolate chips into a large bowl. Pour the custard through the strainer over the milk chocolate, and then stir until the chocolate is melted. Add the cocoa powder and vanilla extract and still until completely incorporated and smooth.

Pour custard through a strainer one last time into an air tight container. Let chill in fridge for at least 10 hours, if not overnight. The mixture will be very thick, I had to scoop mine out…it didn’t pour into the machine.

Then follow your ice cream machine manufactures instructions for churning ice cream in your machine. After the ice cream has churned, fold in the Peep pieces. Place into an air tight freezer safe container and let it freeze at least another 4 hours.

I’m type #1. They are delish right out of the box! They are especially awesome when you get them on clearance after the holiday. I still have one box of Valentine’s Peeps that I bought on Feb 15. It’s a bummer Easter is so late in the season this year, but I can wait it out.

Wow, just reading the ingredients list gave me a cavity. I’m one of the peep haters, I’ve never liked them, I don’t know why. My sister on the other hand, looooooooooves peeps. Which reminds me, I should purprise her with some peeps next time I go to the store!

I keep kosher now so it’s a non-issue, but as a child I never liked Peeps. Actually, the only marshmallow things I liked were smores & breakfast cereals w/those weird hard marshmallows.

I don’t like to eat them, but I do like to squish them and play with them-kind of like Play Doh 🙂
I’m not a big marshmallow fan except in Rice Krispie treats.

Well I love peeps just about any way I can get em. And ice cream just about any way I can get it. And then you went and combined the two. Making it way too easy for me to get both of em. At the same time. Nice.

I’m with Mrs. L – I’m a #4. I like to eat a few fresh and then set them aside to get nice and stale for later.

And occasionally I like to microwave one and make them blow up and then eat the fragments.
    Mmm…peeps.

I’ve never been a big fan of peeps, but I’ve never had them stale! I’d probably like them better that way! I love stale cheetos… and I like a lot of food stale lol. We’re weird ones.
Also, I saw a comment that said they didn’t like peeps, but liked to squish them and play with them… I used to squish and mush regular marshmallows until they got all gooey and elastic. They were way better that way lol – we always called them “Ghost gum” but I don’t know if it was called that anywhere else. Right. Weird.

Microwaved until puffy and delicious 🙂 But you have to eat them super fast, otherwise they get super crunchy, which is still delicious

Love the idea of starting your ice cream with chocolate milk. Why not? And why didn’t I think of this???

Well, I never! I like my Peeps stale and crusty, too. I am amazed that other people do. I was sure I was the only oddball.
I also like stale cake doughnuts, without glaze. At least 2/3 days is perfect. With a cup of coffee, I am in doughnut heaven!
Other than that, I think I am rather normal. (yeah, right!)

I’m a fresh peep gal, myself. I found the best version ever at Target this year too. A two pack of chocolate mousse chick Peeps with their bottoms dipped in dark chocolate. I can’t find any image online, so I’ll just have to sacrifice and get another package so I can post one on my blog =)

This will probably amount to my 15 minutes of fame….drum roll…I live in the city that makes Peeps. In this fair city on New Year’s Eve, on the stroke of midnight, they actually drop a giant Peep. It’s completely true, I know everyone is now jealous. Come visit there are always plenty of Peeps to be had.
