My puppy has a special request. Due to the recent pet food recall I have been thinking a lot about what we feed her. Luckily, her pet food is the snobby kind from the Vet’s office and so it was not one of the recalled ones(plus it is dry food). But her dog biscuits are from Iams, which is one of the recalled brands. I want to start making her homemade biscuits instead. So if you have a recipe could you please either post it here or send it to me(luvbriere (at) gmail (dot) com). She really loves peanut butter or chicken. Also, please spread the word about the North America recall. Many people do not have internet and may not even know.

What a little cutie! I occasionally make little baked liver treats for my pup, they’re not cookies but he adores them!
500g liver
1 cup flour
1 egg
1/4 – 1/2 cup fine cornmeal/polenta
Blend the liver into a paste, mix everything together and bake at 180 degrees C for 30 mins for chewy treats, longer for crunchier ones. If you bake them in a tray, you can just cut them up after they come out of the oven 🙂

I had made a few batches of doggies biscuit when my dog’s alive. The biscuits turned very hard after a few days (it was his concern as he didn’t have strong teeth). The recipe as I recall very much like Ellie’s but with yeast as leavening agent, and with wheat flour in addition. Let me go check my old file.

I’m so glad you posted this call for recipes; even though my dog and I weren’t affected by the recall here in Italy, I’ve still been thinking it’s better to do homemade for her just like I would for us humans. Can’t wait to check out everyone’s suggestions!

Then again, Flurry pretty much eats anything — including frozen broccoli.

Your dog is gorgeous. I know, that food recall thing has really scared me. Fortunately my pets don’t eat any of the food on the list and all are doing well.
My friend made homemade dog biscuits and sold them at flea markets and made quite a good take doing that.

Favorite Dog Biscuits
People can eat these too, but the sugarless dough is bitter before baking to its toasty flavored hard-texture which rivals that of bones. Peanut butter is used for flavor, egg as a binder, cereal for texture, powdered milk for nutrition and garlic for flea prevention. No salt or cornmeal since cornmeal is difficult to digest. If your dog can’t tolerate eggs, add additional water to make a dough that is just slightly sticky.
3 cups whole wheat flour
2 cups multi-grain oatmeal or old-fashioned oats
1/4 cup wheat germ
1/4 cup nonfat dry milk powder
1 1/4 cups water
1 large egg (or omit and use water – see note above)
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
peanut butter to taste
Adjust a rack in the lower third of the oven and preheat to 275 degrees. Line baking sheet with parchment paper. Toss the flour, oats, wheat germ and powdered milk in a large bowl to blend thoroughly. Blend water, peanut butter and egg in a food processor or blender until smooth. Add garlic to dry ingredients, then add all dry ingredients to wet and stir until blended.
Dough will be stiff, so use your hands- it will be easier. roll or pat dough into a 1/2 inch thickness, cut our biscuit shapes with a 3-inch bone shape cookie cutter. Reroll scraps and continue until dough is gone. Place cookies on baking sheet and bake for about 90 minutes. For crisper, drier biscuits bake a total of three hours.
Store well-dried biscuits in an air-tight container – leave the container open for a few days to make sure they are completely dry.
Makes three dozen delicious biscuits.
